2007 Marqués de Murrieta reserva Rioja

Dark berry jam, and a little brine, and warm allspice.

The Italian wine you are going to try next will seem briny but less full of berry jam and spice by comparison, and the Napa cabernet you will taste after that will seem heavier and smokier -- like pure barbecue sauce. Not that there's anything wrong with that, if you like it.

Rich and good.

Go here for more on Marques de Murrieta's history and wines.

Retail, about $22
